According to the report:

-
The global market for IT services for the O&G industry continues to grow at a healthy pace, especially in upstream.
Infosys approach: Infosys' capabilities are in oilfield services, upstream, energy trading and risk management, downstream refining, and supply chain operations, rather than generic back-office implementations. It has built these capabilities over a period of time based on the perceived need in the market.
-
While the industry is under cost pressure, O&G companies put a premium on value delivered. The expectation is that the professional services firm will engage and deliver, but not need to be managed intensively.
Infosys approach: Infosys has organized around what it terms a "global energy practice" — an overlay to its model of customer engagement. The practice brings together the company's divisions — consulting and systems integration, business IT services and products, platforms and solutions — to deliver solutions to the energy industry. This energy practice is intended to supply cohesion and knowledge sharing to a STAR customer service model, consisting of account representative, account manager, and technical experts for the company's key accounts across geographies.
Cost containment is provided using a global delivery model. The oil and gas industry prefers a larger percentage of on-location staff than in the other industries that Infosys services. Delivery location also depends upon the phase of the project, with the early phases of a project including scoping and technology selection with a greater onsite presence and more "offshore" resources, contributing to implementation, integration, and testing, resources that are available at a lower cost.
-
Global methodologies are preferred, but a firm must demonstrate that it has local resources to support marketing, sales, and distribution, especially in regions such as the Middle East and Africa (MEA).

The ability for a professional services firm to attract, motivate, and retain talent is also paramount as the O&G companies expect expertise as well as stability from their partners in this talent-constrained industry.
Infosys approach: In the past year, there has been a ramp-up in the hiring of professionals with oil and gas IT expertise. The company has developed computer-based training programs for its oil and gas staff as well as its sales team. Employees can move up to more advanced levels by completing each program and demonstrating competency.
