National Provider Identifier (NPI)
National Provider Identifier (NPI) is an HIPAA mandate requiring all medical providers who submit healthcare transactions electronically to apply for NPI through Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Providers must use the assigned NPI and/or sub-parts, if required, on all HIPAA mandated transactions starting May 23, 2007, with a contingency period up to May 23, 2008. NPI will replace all other provider identifiers, including Medicare and Medicaid numbers.
NPI matching and cross-walking with legacy systems is challenging because often, clean data is not available. In a cross-walk solution, payors will need to ensure the accuracy of provider data utilized by the cross-walk and the NPI data source (NPPES). Incorrect implementation will significantly impact business operations and increase operational costs.
