Healthcare: Convergence
Interest in healthy lifestyles is driving a demand for products that promote fitness and overall well-being. Health-conscious consumers have begun to identify life-style patterns that cause health deterioration, illness and death. The average individual spends 90% of his waking hours in front of a computer, exercises very little and is likely ignorant of what a healthy diet even comprises.
With the cost of healthcare rising, it has become imperative that chronic conditions are better monitored, especially among the aged. According to a 2005 WHO report, Chronic diseases are responsible for 60% of deaths worldwide [1] and the world's elderly population - people 60 years of age and older - is 650 million. By 2050, the "graying" population is forecast to reach 2 billion [2].
The average healthcare consumer wants devices which have good battery life and do not restrict day-to-day activity. This has led to considerable interest in technological advances such as miniaturized sensors that allow non-invasive health monitoring. It is possible today to deliver wellness and activity services wirelessly at home or “on the go” directly to the user. The model for healthcare services and products is now switching from health professional-centric to patient-centric. Infosys designs and builds products recognizing this shift in paradigms.
