
Rural Development
The primary challenge of development in rural India is the skills deficit of the local population. Education and vocational training help villagers earn a sustainable livelihood.
The Infosys Foundation has organized training camps for destitute women and built orphanages where education is earmarked as a priority area. The Foundation donated US$ 6.8 million towards relief and rehabilitation of flood-affected districts of Karnataka. The project is a model of sustainable community development.
The Foundation implements programs to improve the welfare of people in rural India:
2010-11
- Constructed 2,541 homes for flood victims of Belgaum, Gulbarga, Dharwad, Gadag, Bagalkot, Bijapur, and Karwar
- Trained tribal communities of Karnataka and Orissa in agriculture, horticulture, sericulture, floriculture, bee-keeping, fishing, dairy, poultry, welding, and carpentry
- Donated sewing machines to women in rural areas of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka
- Provided training in hygiene and sanitation, health and nutrition, and skills and livelihood
2009-10
- Partnered with Vanrai Trust, Pune, to help farmers apply for loans related to scientific farming projects
- Constructed 2,037 homes for flood victims of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka
- Rehabilitated flood victims in West Bengal through Ramakrishna Mission and 'Akanksha', the Corporate Social Responsibility group of Infosys, Bhubaneswar
2008-09
- Rehabilitated flood-affected victims of Orissa and Bihar
- Trained Kolar residents in rainwater harvesting
