| Bachelor's, master's | Java | 10 | Java Test Oracle Tool Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) A Test Oracle is a mechanism that is used during testing to determine whether a software component behaves correctly or not. The Oracle problem is widely acknowledged in the testing literature and several methods for developing Test Oracles, such as those using formal specifications, algebraic specifications, specification animation, range checking, built-in checks, simulations, documentation and parallel implementations, have been reported. The aim of this project is to develop prototype tool support to generate Test Oracle using popular methods. |
|
| Bachelor's, master's | Testing | 10 | Empirical evaluation of software testing techniques Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) Many testing techniques, such as black box and white box, are available in the literature. Some of them are developed keeping in mind different situations, environments and requirements; some of them complement each other; and some of them are similar. It is difficult to choose an appropriate testing technique from many available techniques. Hence, there is a need to determine effective testing techniques. The aim of this project is to determine effective software testing techniques through an empirical evaluation. |

| Master's, PhD | Research | 10 | Generation of use case models from requirements specifications Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) The main aim of this project is to derive a framework for generation of use case models from requirements specifications. In general, use case models consist of use case diagrams and descriptions, are derived manually from requirements specification. The process is error-prone due to extensive human dependency and most of the time generates different or inconsistent outcomes. An aim of this project is to address the issue of different or inconsistent outcomes by developing methods for automatic generation of use case models. A transformation method is required for extraction of relevant facts from requirements specifications expressed in natural language into semi-structured specifications. Another method is required for the automatic translation of semi-structured specifications into use case models and vice versa. |

| Master's, PhD | Research / Development | 10 | Requirements specification for distributed Agile development Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) In distributed development, software development teams are often geographically distributed from their customers and end users. The demand for distributed development increases due to high travel costs, the local availability of skilled technical staff and a motivating factor, namely, the desire to exploit a 24-hour workday. Distributed development with an Agile process model may reduce production time. However, distributed development creates extensive communication and coordination challenges on the effectiveness of requirements engineering. The main challenge of a distributed working environment is to derive effective software requirements specification (SRS). Requirements activities may be globally distributed as analysts are likely to be working with geographically distributed stakeholders and their teams may be distributed at various in-house locations. Hence, techniques are needed to facilitate and manage distributed requirements elicitation, story cards, high-level modeling, requirements negotiation and the management of teams which are not just geographically distributed, but distributed in terms of time zone, culture and language. The aim of this project is to address this challenge and develop techniques / methods to derive effective SRS for distributed agile development in a distributed working environment. |

| Bachelor's, master's | Software development | 10 | Real-time context-aware communication Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) Software development organizations have started to adopt follow-the-sun (FTS) approach to achieve customers’ expectation of faster delivery of software products. FTS is an approach in which software development work proceed around the clock across time zones. The software development teams are geographically distributed across different time zones, may be from different organizations, and have different cultures or work environments. As some of the teams are always working on software development, the work is going non-stop 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To support express delivery of software products, there is a need to devise a technique to reduce communication time between the teams when they pass on the tasks. The main aim of this project is to develop automatic real-time context-aware communication generation from day-to-day software development tasks, such as coding and testing, which can be used in distributed development and other development environments. |

| Bachelor's, master's,MBA | Social network | 12 | Social network analytics: clustering large social networks Industry: Infosys Labs Location: HYDERABAD (India) Machine learning models used in analyzing hugely dynamic social networks need to continuously adapt by incrementally training with new data and rules while discarding the oldest. Many of the models built require determining all-pairs shortest paths among reachable nodes in the network. However, efficiently determining the all-pairs shortest path remains a main problem in such dynamic networks. Evolving technologies based on cloud create scope for new algorithms, which can solve this problem. This project includes survey, design and prototype implementation. Scope of this project can even include leveraging existing cloud infrastructure. |
|
| Master's, MBA, PhD | Cloud | 20 | Security control evaluation method for cloud environment Industry: Infosys Labs Location: HYDERABAD (India) In a multitenant environment, many companies hosting the data in a single environment are unsure about the secure data management practices on a day-to-day basis. Some cloud provider might be using management tools to have a complete view of performance and security control status of customer data, but reports are not always shared with the cloud customer. This is more considered as an internal management issue of the cloud provider. It is important from the customers’ point of view to have a more comprehensive snapshot of their security control status of data within the cloud. It becomes more important when the customer is using more than one cloud service and wants to have readily available and demonstrable control capabilities with respect to confidentiality, integrity and availability. In all cases, responsibility for ensuring the protection of end user data lies with cloud service customer company. We plan to propose a security evaluation model and dashboard useful for cloud customers to have a realistic view of their security posture in the cloud environment. This will help the cloud customer understand the security requirements that the cloud provider and cloud customer need to utilize the benefits of cloud environment in a secure and optimum way. |

| Bachelor's, master's, MBA, PhD | Analytics | 24 | Quantitative techniques for preventive software maintenance Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) Presently, majority of the software maintenance work is reactive in nature. In reactive maintenance, the corrective actions are taken to improve functionality after the failures / bugs are reported by the end user. However, several studies have indicated that the cost of fixing a failure after it is found is USD40K. Therefore, there is a need to focus on prevention of bugs, so that we could prevent failures from occurring rather than correct it after occurrence. Employing such preventive methods and techniques on software applications before deployment is considered as preventive maintenance (PM). PM techniques include, but are not limited to, failure and bug prediction, regression testing, software rejuvenation, architecture conformance, use of knowledge engineering techniques, etc. These techniques utilize the past information available on the application like version histories, bug histories, and documentation, and provide solutions that identify and / or estimate the occurrence of failures. As a step towards quantifying the PM techniques and measures, our research aims to build a novel software quality metric called “Preventability Metric” that would be derived from a quantitative evaluation of the efficiency and effectiveness of several individual preventive techniques employed on the software before its deployment. |

| Master's, MBA, PhD | Social network | 12 | Community discovery in online social networks Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) A social system is composed of persons or groups of persons who interact and mutually influence each other’s behavior and is bounded by a set of interrelated activities that together constitute a single entity. Social systems exist at all levels such as people, families, organizations, communities, societies, and cultures. Given a social network, we require a sensible decomposition of the graph into sub-graphs, where in some reasonable sense the nodes in each sub-graph have more to do with each other than with outsiders, they form communities. Community structures and overlapping structures can be detected. |
|
| Master's, PhD | Social network | 12 | Social network visualization Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) The project involves visualization of social networks. The objective is to understand interesting social structures and their peer linkages. |
|
| Master's, PhD | Social network | 12 | Modeling of online social systems Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) A social network cannot be rightly (or rather fully) represented by merely a social graph that connects nodes (users) with the other nodes (connections / friends). There should be some model (some kind of integrated graph) that links users with their interests and other entities (brand, ad, games, etc.) they like and connects different users with common interests. This graph / model will enable linking of a user to interested services and connecting different users with common interests. This type of model would reveal many useful insights like user-user relations, user-brand relations, and brand-brand relations. These kinds of insights might (i) help companies improve the marketing of their products toward specific group of people like users with loyalty to a brand (ii) assist social network sites to better target online services (advertisements, etc.). |

| Bachelor's, master's | Analytics | 12 | Project Marple – Core Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) Scientific approaches to solve complex problems, as well as modern business processes of the 21st century need to process massive structured and unstructured data in real time. This is only possible if one writes very specialized algorithms that harness the TFLOP / PFLOP power of multicore / GPGPU. However, writing such algorithms is not easy. Here one needs to take care of task distribution and synchronization of tasks carefully. A programmer needs to design such an algorithm with small and relatively independent set of activities to exploit parallel execution. Management of data dependency, optimal data transfer protocol between CPU and GPU, identification of various parts of the program that are data parallel are extremely important. There are several specific internship projects related to Marple. The outcome of these projects will be used to build a set of design aids to implement, analyze, and transform applications for parallel hardware. These aids will be made available to the developers through commonly used design and programming workbenches such as VSTS and Eclipse. The specific areas we intend to investigate are: 1. Design time assistance: algorithms to assist designers to write data-parallel applications 2. Transformation assistance: Here we intend to build algorithms to identify implicit or explicit data-parallelisms that exist in a given sequential program and transform the program to port on GPU. We address various issues related to analysis, prediction and transformation of an existing code. |

| Master's | Market research | 24 | System reliability prediction based on degradation models Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) Reliability prediction based on degradation modeling consists of multiple degradation factors such as environmental conditions and mechanical defects. The system comprises of multiple components and components may have multiple degradation paths. The system reliability assessment is based on the degradation modeling with uncertainties caused in the model. When the collected degradation data is observed, it is often not known which degradation model is applicable. Here we propose some non-parametric inference methods for modeling degradation data and applying this methodology to ILI data collected in pipeline integrity management. We will compare these results with different degradation models and come up with generalized approach. The models will differ with the kind of systems (such as series parallel and bridge) and kind domain (oil and Gas, aircraft, etc.) we are assuming for the analysis. |

| Bachelor's, master's | Research / Development | 14 | CAPTCHA for mobile platform Industry: Infosys Labs Location: HYDERABAD (India) Raising the security bar for automated programs / application to enter into secure networks or utilizing private server resources is the need of the hour. CAPTCHA is used to prevent automated programs from logging into computer systems and utilizing the resources. Though Static CAPTCHA does its job of averting the intrusion of automated programs, this can be defeated in many scenarios. There are many more methods prevailing in CAPTCHA to detect and remove BOT attacks, some of them include 1) Gimpy CAPTCHA, 2) Bongo CAPTCHA, 3) PIX, 4) ECO, and 5) motion CAPTCHA. Of these, the most commonly used model is the Gimpy CAPTCHA, which is easier and cost-effective when in use. The proliferation of smart mobile devices and applications that render desired services on them efficiently, they are increasingly popular with customers. This also opens the window for attackers to exploit the weakness and vulnerabilities (e.g., DOS) of the applications that are being offered. Thus there is a need to have a CAPTCHA for the mobile platform. In this project, we aim to develop a solution that typically suits the mobile application environment. |

| Bachelor's, master's | Security testing framework | 16 | A fault-injection-based security testing framework for enterprise cloud infrastructure Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) Today software and software enabled product companies heavily rely on offering services through enterprise cloud computing infrastructure. It essentially deals with on-demand sharing / leasing of large data and resources in the cloud, storing the data in distributed data center networks, providing operational accessibility and executing the data in remote systems, and offering integration of the data to provide service-level functionality to clients. This opens up new data security risks, which have significant downsize impact on the overall business value and profitability of the companies. The extreme reliance on cloud computing infrastructure makes the software products a high-value target for those who wish to exploit or sabotage the functional or operational vulnerabilities of the cloud. The objective of this project is to develop process, method and tools for testing logical and physical security implementation in enterprise cloud infrastructure (mainly in SaaS and IaaS models). Here, the logical security implementations mean the consistent and protected operational implementations (execution, resource sharing, access, process migration, etc.) of different applications on distributed virtual machines. On the other hand, physical security implementations mean the access control and encryption based protections over the data center network. The methodology will essentially aim to identify the presence of various security vulnerabilities, which attackers can exploit to launch different potential security attacks (such as, men-in-the-middle, TCP hijacking (spoofing), service manifest attacks (malicious manifest / SLA format injection), violation of migration and security policies and identity theft / impersonation, denial of service attacks, etc. The project will explore the possibilities of using source code fault injection and model checking tools for generating adequate security tests towards solutions. |

| MBA | Online applications | 08 | Next-generation online, mobile and branch banking Industry: Financial Services and Insurance Location: PUNE (India) The project requires analysis and study on next-generation banking and there is a need to validate our view from multiple dimensions: 1. A fundamental rethink of customer experience is required across channels, products, geographies, brands, devices and branches. Specifically when prospecting, banks need to implement and evolve with new trends to acquire new and retain existing customers. A comprehensive study is required with respect to geographies on what next-generation online, mobile and branch banking would look like. 2. The study will provide in-depth details for next-generation banking. We need to do a gap analysis with the identified trends for next-generation banking. Are these trends valid worldwide or do they vary across geographies? Infosys provides consulting to different banks in different segments and geographies with potentially different needs. We need to do a broad sweep of the needs and establish the adequacy of the trends and strategize to meet these needs by the banks. We must provide a standardized consulting model, which is customizable for a given bank and help identify the target state for next-generation online banking. |

| Master's, PhD | Software engineering | 12 | An authoring of requirements constrained by knowledge extracted from process artifacts Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India),PUNE (India) Requirements engineering is the branch of software engineering that deals with proper designing of functions and constraints of software systems. It is believed that the final quality of software systems delivered depends on the requirements on which the software is built. Requirements elicitation is a critical part in any software development cycle. We shall propose a requirements analysis constrained by knowledge implicit in the artifacts, thereby addressing two problems – how to make tacit the knowledge in the form of OWL ontology / knowledge base hidden in these artifacts, and how to use this knowledge to effect the authoring of requirements document written in a subset of the natural language (CNL). We shall illustrate these ideas by instantiating a general framework, with process artifacts in BPMN being the target from which we extract tacit knowledge. |

| Master's, PhD | Compliance | 12 | Compliance checking of business processes Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) Business organizations are increasingly using business processes, typical examples of them being applying for a bank account, handling visa processing by immigration service, etc. Large process-aware information systems typically log the steps performed during execution of an operational process in some sort of an event log, which can be further mined to obtain valuable information about the underlying process. Event logs show occurrences of events at specific points in time, where each event refers to a specific process and an instance thereof, i.e., a case. They can be analyzed to check whether they are compliant with certain pre-determined rules, e.g., compliance rules. Compliance rules state regulations, policies and quality of constraints business processes must adhere to. Given the large number of rules and their frequency of change, manual compliance checking becomes a tedious job. Automated compliance checking can be used for this purpose. In this project, we shall try to come up with a technique that will help compliance checking of our internal processes. In this framework, compliance rules are translated into temporal formulas, processes are converted to some formal models, and using a model checker it is verified whether the latter satisfies the temporal logic formulas. |

| Bachelor's, master's | Android platform | 12 | DRM Content Viewer for Android platform Industry: Infosys Labs Location: HYDERABAD (India) Digital rights management (DRM) is a class of access control technology that allows content owners to set and enforce the restrictions on digital content. The content owners typically include content publishers / distributors and copyright-holding companies such as e-learning websites, music or entertainment industries. To prevent digital piracy, content owners use different techniques, eventually to have control on how their content can be used. DRM techniques control the access to sensitive content by encrypting the original content and including access information and user rights on the content in the form of a license. The user rights include what the users are allowed to do such as viewing, playing or printing a file. Infosys Labs has a digital rights management solution that supports content protection on desktops and laptops. The scope of this project is to extend its capabilities to mobile content on Android platform. In specific, our aim is to create / customize content viewers on Android to support DRM protection for the content. The Android platform, by means of a DRM API, provides an extensible DRM framework that permits the applications (content-rendering software) to manage rights-protected content according to the constraints that are associated with the content. We aim to use the capabilities of Android DRM API to create a PDF / multimedia viewer that interacts with a DRM server for rendering DRM protected content. |

| Bachelor's, master's | Device fingerprinting | 12 | Device fingerprinting Industry: Infosys Labs Location: HYDERABAD (India) Fingerprint is information collected about a device that uniquely identifies it. The device can be a mobile device, desktop, operating system, browser, etc. Unique device fingerprinting capability is useful in many application scenarios. For example, unique browser fingerprinting capabilities are very much useful in Web analytics to differentiate real traffic from click frauds. Similarly device fingerprinting can also be leveraged in building secure licensing mechanisms and digital rights management systems (DRM) that bind software to run only on specified device hardware. Further device fingerprinting is finding applications in preventing identity theft (phishing scams), etc. Besides its usefulness, it also throws very interesting research problems that excite people to work on it. The challenge is in terms of identifying the right set of parameters that are diverse, stable, and easy-to-collect programmatically. This project aims at doing a literature survey of the state-of-the-art in device fingerprinting technology, an evaluation of fingerprinting techniques, identification of criteria for selection of parameters (e.g., reliability, diversity, stability, ease of access), creation of sets of parameters that are useful for fingerprinting mobile devices, desktop / laptops, and browsers. The project scope also involves building a library that helps in fingerprint creation and verification by dynamically querying the underlying device and demonstrating its results through a POC. |

| MBA | Framework | 12 | Framework for predictive software maintenance model Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) Project overview: Software maintenance is defined as the process of modifying existing software (installed in the production environment and is being used on regular basis by the business users) to correct faults to improve performance and adapt the system to the changed environment. The maintenance requests are of following categories: corrective, preventive, adaptive, user support and perfective. Today business is facing the challenge of managing and reducing the maintenance and support cost of IT systems. In the current scenario, the maintenance cost is around 80 % of IT spend and at the same time the software systems are getting more complex day by day due to sophisticated business needs, leading to more unpredictability in IT spend. In this context, it is imperative that we have a framework that helps in estimating the right amount of maintenance work needed in a new system, predicting the future state of the system and when the system will need to undergo preventive maintenance exercise, so as to ensure IT spend for the system is kept under control. Primary objectives: a) The framework to estimate the maintenance / support effort for a new system that is to be rolled over to production based on predicting the software maintenance quality. b) The framework to predict system performance trends / system outages, and thereby determining the need for preventive maintenance exercise. |

| Bachelor's, master's | Analysis | 16 | probabilistic design of Helical coil spring Industry: Engineering Location: PUNE (India) Recent trends of structural mechanics applications in finite element analysis demonstrate an increasing demand for efficient analysis tools. This topic investigates probabilistic analysis approach applied in finite element analysis for modeling helical coil springs used in various applications such as automotive shock absorbers and aerospace landing gears. Using ANSYS, finite element models needs to be developed to simulate helical coil spring behavior under given loading conditions. Comparison of analytical results with the FE results should be carried out to validate the FE analysis process. In reality, uncertainties exist in a system and environment that may make the application of deterministic design unreliable, with the result that the values of the variables that are acting on the system cannot be predicted with certainty. As such, probabilistic approach should be applied to the model after deterministic analysis. In this study, the probabilistic analysis approach should be applied to account for the variability in fabrication and other input parameters. Probabilistic methodology applied in finite element modeling provides another alternative way of structural analysis of helical coil spring to achieve a robust and reliable design in a more efficient way. In this study, Monte Carlo simulation should be used to analyze the effect of parameter uncertainty. This can be done using commercial FE tool ANSYS. To perform this analysis in ANSYS, user should be familiar with APDL, parametric modeling and probabilistic design. |

| Master's, MBA, PhD | Cloud | 24 | In-cloud analytics: data analytics over cloud data Industry: Infosys Labs Location: HYDERABAD (India) Cloud research is focused on delivering an application and computing power as a service. Large number of users access huge number of services residing on millions of servers. Huge voluminous data gets processed every second. The cloud research team at SETLabs has been researching on the applicability of the cloud to various requirements and technologies. A potential outcome of in-cloud analytics project at Infosys labs is to build efficient, optimized infrastructure and resource usage of cloud, and can help in providing computationally heavy analytic services at a very low cost way by parallelizing over cloud. Hosting data mining algorithms over cloud possesses many challenges. For example, development of an attention allocation over cloud spans multiple areas including cloud analytics, distributed analytics, machine learning and text mining. Attention allocation system continuously and adaptively “crawls” the Web while collecting information, which can be categorized into predefined categories. The information so extracted will be rated with relevance score against any particular customer service requirement. Depending on these relevance scores, real-time alerts, reports and feedbacks are sent to customers for their action. The Attention allocation system provides a means of finding the relevance of predefined categories with respect to customer service requirements. This intern project aims at building visualization-driven data analytics for high dimensional real data to study the impact of classification and clustering techniques. Deliverables of the project work are: Literature review on high-performance-computing-based analytics in the cloud environment, development of algorithms for visualization-driven analytics using classification and clustering techniques to support in-cloud analytics, and prototype development. |

| Master's, MBA, PhD | Analysis | 24 | Analyzing financial parameters using predictive analytics techniques Industry: Infosys Labs Location: HYDERABAD (India) An inference and diagnostic framework helps in identifying the reasons for a symptom, deviation from normal behavior exhibited by the system, and suggesting a complete, optimal repair strategy for putting the system back to action. Bayesian network helps in enabling root cause analysis that is based on past data. On the other hand, data sets, where the data follows the time series, are generally very large and increase very fast. Remembering the complete data set for any analytics each time represents an overhead. In order to use the vast data set, it is a better idea to capture interesting patterns from the data set, which describe important behavior patterns of data. Thus, there is a clear need to identify interesting time periods or streaks. This project aims at analyzing financial parameters (e.g., macroeconomic variables) and their impact when there is a change in one variable or more. We would like to use Bayesian networks and streak analysis to predict the future scenarios. This project involves designing novel algorithms (or extending existing techniques) to predict the impact and also find the streaks in a time series, followed by prototype development. |

| Bachelor's, master's, PhD | Research and development | 24 | Project Marple – Core Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) Scientific approaches to solve complex problems, as well as modern business processes of the 21st century need to process massive structured and unstructured data in real time. Management of data-dependency, optimal data transfer protocol between CPU and GPU, and identification of various parts of the program that are data parallel are extremely important. There are several specific internship projects related to Marple. Outcomes of these projects will be used to build a set of design aids to implement, analyze, and transform applications for parallel hardware. These aids will be made available to the developers through commonly used design and programming workbenches such as VSTS and Eclipse. The specific areas we intend to investigate are: 1. Design time assistance: algorithms to assist designers to write data-parallel applications 2. | master's,MBA,PhD | Social media | 10 | Using social media analytics for social risk assessment Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE ( India ) Today organizations are held accountable for environmental and social problems created by their extended suppliers. Globalization and increasing competition have resulted in long and complex supply chains with reduced visibility and control over all the links. It is becoming increasingly difficult for parent organizations to identify, measure, prioritize, and mitigate risks for improved decision-making. Social media can provide early warning of risks facing an organization. Should the board formally review this information, or does this represent an encroachment on managerial prerogative? Which social media metrics should be presented to the board and which is to be excluded? Where do the responsibilities of the board end and those of management begin? One important task of the board is to monitor organizational reputation. How is this currently done? Should overall sentiment derived from social media sources be a primary input in this analysis? Some of questions to be studied are: How do we collect massive amounts of social media data and what techniques can be used for correcting the effects and biases arising from incomplete and missing data? What methods can be used to extract and track the flow of interesting pieces of information that spread and diffuse among users? How can we identify the subset of content that is discussing not only a specific entity, but higher-level concepts that are topically relevant? How do we overcome the information overload and provide users with rich and coherent experience? How to deal with unreliable and often conflicting information? What notions of trust are appropriate? |

The problems that impact organizations substantially are the grand challenges of organizations. If challenges are clearly defined and validated as grand challenges then the organization can focus on those challenges and will be able to devise some solutions to tackle those challenges. The key issues are: How to identify organizational challenges? How to validate identified challenges as grand challenges? How to prioritize grand challenges? How to align grand challenges to empower tomorrow’s enterprise? From a technology perspective, the issue is about using technology to manage the grand challenge. The solution to address this problem lies in developing a comprehensive framework, which will provide a step-by-step methodology to identifying and validating the grand challenge. The methodology for developing the framework can be: (1) First step is to identify the key variables that will define grand challenge. (2) After identifying the key variables, it is necessary to find the data and data sources required for those variables. (3) Metrics need to be developed to identify the impact of these variables and availability or unavailability of data. (4) A formula or algorithm has to be devised to identify the overall impact of the grand challenge on the organization. This framework will be helpful in prioritizing challenges, and hence resources can be optimally used to solve organizational challenges. It will help organizations to be more competitive in tomorrow’s world. |

| Bachelor's, master's, PhD | Network analysis | 12 | Range forecasting Industry: Infosys Labs Location: HYDERABAD (India) Forecasting plays an important role in planning in advance for businesses-like demand / production of consumer goods, energy, etc., and selling / buying stocks, weather prediction, and many more. There are areas where forecasting of any output variable can be uncertain, and it depends on how some external key variables behave during the period. Situations where the chance of forecasting output variable accurately is very less due to uncertainty, it is useful to forecast a thin range (within which value of output the variable may lie). Our requirement is to come up with a novel range forecasting algorithm as a part of Bayesian network analysis on numerical data sets like financial and operational data. We aim to devise an approach which can make use of the Bayesian analysis results, like inference and post distributions, to find better and thinner forecasted range. |

| master's,PhD | Requirements management | 12 | Concept extraction from natural language use case requirements Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India),PUNE (India) Requirements management is the process of documenting, analyzing, tracing, prioritizing and agreeing on requirements, and then controlling change and communicating to relevant stakeholders. It is a continuous process throughout a project. This process of requirements management would be greatly helped if the requirements could be stated in an unambiguous way, such that it is understandable and acceptable to all the stakeholders. One way to achieve this would be to generate a requirements model in a representation with the characteristics of being unambiguous and easy to understand. Creating such models directly would be a difficult task. Instead, if requirements could be represented using the normal requirements elicitation techniques, and from those requirements if a model could be generated / extracted then it could be very useful. If this model was represented in a format like ontology – wherein it can be further analyzed for consistency and completeness, and be queried upon for traceability – then such a model would greatly help in solving most of the problems with requirements engineering. |

| Bachelor's | Digital technology | 12 | Electronic signatures – generic file signing and verification utility Industry: Infosys Labs Location: HYDERABAD (India) Electronic signatures are the digital equivalent of handwritten signatures. Electronic signatures provide the consent of signer for the content signed and are recognized as legally valid instruments across much of the geography. Electronic signatures help in completely automating (digitizing) business processes. The main bottleneck in many business automation efforts is the need for manual approvals in the workflow using ink (handwritten) signatures. Electronic signatures help in resolving this issue. Electronic signatures help in building faster, more efficient, secure and cost-effective business processes. They result in significant cost saving as a result of avoiding paper and associated costs (paper, printing, courier, storage, etc.) and also result in quick turnaround times in closing business deals. The advancements in digital signature technology, mandate from regulations to build secure processes, and pressure from market competition to reduce cost of operations are the main driving factors behind the rise in adoption of electronic signatures today. From a technology point of view electronic signatures address authenticity, integrity, and non-repudiation requirements of business transactions. The aim of this project is to build a generic utility that helps in digitally signing and verifying any electronic content (txt, html, pdf, office docs, images, executable, etc.). The tool should either run stand-alone or should be invoked from within a browser environment. The tool should also support multiple signature format standards like XML Dsig, and CMS/PKCS#7. The signature verification process involves building and verifying the digital certificate chain for status verification, and can also be used in case of non-repudiation litigations. |

| Bachelors | Analysis | 20 | Custom entity extraction through machine learning Industry: Infosys Labs Location: PUNE ( India ) A huge amount of data is getting accumulated in the form of literature, on the Web, etc. Keeping track of this data and its intelligent use has been identified as a major challenge in the information systems community. Take an example of an analyst analyzing the energy companies. She/he may be interested in all the energy projects and their respective production capacities. To gather this information and to use for advanced analytics, she/he needs a solution which can extract this form in unstructured format. Though humans can extract this kind of information, the hugeness of this unstructured data makes it impossible to be done manually. So we need machines to automatically extract relevant information for us. This is an open challenge the information systems community has been facing for three decades. One of the strands of our work deals with developing solutions to information extraction from text. In many cases, the best way to do custom extraction is by using machine learning. The objective of this project is to apply and enhance some of the already existing machine learning techniques (HMM, Naïve Bayes, CRF, Advanced-SVM) for the problem of custom entity extraction from unstructured data in natural language English. Tasks in the project: Study various machine learning techniques. Apply techniques (and produce code) for custom entity extraction. Perform deep analysis and evaluation of various machine learning techniques. |

But this can only be understood by humans, and deploying humans to understand and consume this volume of information is impractical. There is a need to automatically transform this information into computer understandable form – a widely accepted fact in the semantic community. Our group, Center of Knowledge-Driven Information Systems (Infosys Labs) is researching this particular area. The internship will also focus on creating tools and systems that make it easier to understand and consume unstructured content. Named-entity recognition (NER) is a subtask of information extraction that seeks to locate and classify atomic elements in text into predefined categories such as the names of persons, organizations, and locations. There are several tools available for NER annotation, but the output of the tool is quite often not accurate. This calls for manual intervention to improve the NER performed by a tool. The objective of this internship is to create a rich and intuitive user interface which is able to display annotations from a variety of tools and will allow for correction of annotations. |

| Bachelors,Masters | Web 2.0 | 12 | Web 2.0 security aider Industry: Infosys Labs Location: HYDERABAD ( India ) With the Web2.0 revolution, the World Wide Web has evolved from a set of hyperlinked static pages to a dynamic computational platform. The ever-increasing innovative features and technologies on the Web have also increased the surface area of attacks, which are used by attackers for malicious purposes. Sources of third-party JavaScripts such as advertisements on Web pages, social plug-ins, and widgets, and HTML elements like images, forms, and iframes freely make HTTP requests from the source page. Similarly, cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks are possible mainly due to entry of foreign scripts into a Web page. To stop these types of attacks, a new security paradigm called ‘Declarative Security Policies’ have evolved, which simplify configuration of security parameters via HTTP headers. The goal of this project is to analyze a Web application with respect to Declarative Security and auto-suggest best practices to be followed. |

| Bachelors,Masters | Web security | 12 | Creating a deliberately vulnerable Web application playground for learning Web security Industry: Infosys Labs Location: HYDERABAD ( India ) Web applications often end up being victims of attacks due to the presence of security weaknesses (vulnerabilities) in their code. Over the years, several independent security experts and organizations have highlighted security risks faced by Web applications in the form of several surveys and analyses, out of which the OWASP Top Ten project is the most popular one in security circles. OWASP (Open Web Application Security Project) is a non-profit open community whose focus is to improve security of software, specifically Web applications. The Top Ten project started by OWASP presents the ten most critical Web application security risks. Its main aim is to educate IT professionals about the consequences of Web application security weaknesses. To demonstrate these top security risks, OWASP started a project called âebGoatâ€, which is a deliberately vulnerable Web application aimed as a learning resource. Though there are several resources on the Web around this area, they have their own boundaries. For example, some of them demonstrate basic attack vectors; some of them are in-depth cheat sheets which may not work in modern browsers / frameworks, etc. The goal of this InStep project is to understand in detail the OWASP Top 10 security risks and create a deliberately vulnerable Web application with these risks in the latest ASP.NET version. It would initially cover breadth (the core Web application setup having all top 10 vulnerabilities with one example each) and would later go into depth (creating an exhaustive cheat sheet for each category). Such an environment will help beginners understand the basics of Web security, advanced practitioners in tightening their precautionary measures / following best practices, and researchers in experimenting with the attack vectors and defense mechanisms. |

| Bachelors | Framework | 12 | Framework to mMigrate JDKX (4,5,6,7) project to JDK8 Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE ( India ) Java platform has lost its agility in past. The language was very stable, but it was not able to attract much attention for quite a few years. Most of the enterprises have their source code written and running stable on JDK (4, 5) platforms. The recent changes in the JDK have brought too many rich features to ignore the language changes. The exercise of converting a pre-JDK7 code into the latest version is both time-consuming and costly. But these changes also bring rich features, which are desirable by both programmers and architects. This project involves programmatically identifying the blocks of code, which can be refactored to use the new constructs of the Java programming language and also utilize the new implementation provided by the latest JRE. The project involves writing a module, which will identify the code sections and automate some part of the code conversion. The project involves writing Eclipse / Netbeans plug-ins to identify the potential code snippet and automate some of the conversion. This also involves studying the impact and the performance of such changes on overall product and services. |

| Master's, MBA, PhD | Workforce management | 6 | Networked organizations and workforce of 2020 Industry: Manufacturing Location: HYDERABAD (India) Brief description: 1. What shape will networked organizations take by 2020? 2. How will the workforce of 2020 look like? 3. What challenges will employee and organizations face? Boundaries between personal and professional life, work life balance, etc. 4. What will be various collaboration options: ESS, OSN, mobility, remote / diversity / global workforce? 5. What challenges and opportunities it throws for companies like Infosys in terms of IT services and business solutions / products? In the course of the five past decades, semantics of corporate core concepts, such as networked organization and workforce, have been subject to sometimes revolutionary redefinitions. It is commonly accepted that this development is attributable to shifts in both economic and sociological power constellations. On the one hand, ongoing processes of globalization increase the internationalization of economic sectors, ranging from banking all the way to manufacturing. On the other hand, relatively new sociopolitical phenomena such as female empowerment, emergence of new technologies, and new generational paradigms of thinking are arguably intricately interconnected with sustainable and inclusive globalization. This poses both challenges and opportunities for networked organizations and the workforce. Assuming that the world will be even more global by 2020, the significance of these issues is likely to remain in the future. Hence, this project deals with a wide range of topics, which eventually have intrinsic impact on how corporations cope with both external and internal changes in terms of business communication and human resource development. |

| Bachelor's, master's, PhD | Distributed computing | 16 | Energy efficient distributed computing Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) With the advent of cloud computing, massive amount of data is being generated. Due to the demand for real-time data processing and analysis, one needs to employ a massive amount of distributed hardware to store, process and analyze this data. Hadoop MapReduce framework is one of them. Hadoop MapReduce paradigm works on large clusters of machines, dealing with many long-running jobs of varying priorities. However, it has been observed that such infrastructure is not always energy efficient. There have been several reports that energy demand to run a data center having such a large distributed infrastructure is growing twice every year. Therefore, it is extremely important to have a distributed computing infrastructure that is not just optimal in terms of performance, but optimal in terms of power usage too. There are reports that show that a 5000-node Google cluster has only 10%-15% CPU utilization, but it is necessary to switch all of them on. Thus, we need an energy-proportional hardware while employing a massively distributed computing infrastructure. In this ongoing research project, we intend to explore various areas of energy-based computing. These will lead to several projects that interns can take up. |
