Linux

Migration of Credit Analysis System of a Major Financial Institution

Business Need
  • Requirement was to cut costs and still provide an exceptional performance
  • Addition/Up-gradation of existing Solaris boxes was costly and except for SUN no other choices existed
  • To remove dependency on ORBIX and migrate the C++ applications (also use Rougewave libraries) so that it runs on both Solaris and Linux
Challenges
  • The GCC compiler is stricter than sun CC compiler e.g. Sun CC was allowing the code to access protected members directly
  • Endian issues, Intel is little endian where as SPARC is big-endian machine
Our Solution
  • Infosys helped the client to migrate the application set seamlessly onto Linux advanced server running on Intel machines
  • Code cleaning was also done as obsolete third party dependent code was removed
Benefits
  • Significant cost savings as Linux running on Intel is much cheaper than Solaris on Sparc.
  • Vendor lock in on SUN was removed
  • Now the clients can afford to have extra machines which helps to make the system failsafe
  • Frequent up gradations are possible at much lesser cost
