To Migrate an application running on Solaris to SuSE Linux cluster
To standardize the application environment using Linux, to reduce costs
To pilot the use of Linux clusters for 24x7 availability
The application uses a host of third party software e.g. Web Logic, Oracle, iPlanet, Log4J etc.
Challenges
To make the application clustered, we now have a list of points relating to Operating system, installation, code modifications etc.
Lack of multi node clustering licenses on Linux for offshore. This was over come by configuring Linux on Single node cluster and configuring multimode cluster on Windows and conducting a POC
Infosys Solution
A prototype was developed on RedHat Linux for checking the feasibility
The code was later Migrated to SuSE 8.1
All the third party software used by the application on Linux cluster were configured
All the configuration and clustering parameters were decided
Infrastructure planning was done to decide on the target hardware
Benefits
The benefits of standardizing the organization's server base on Linux were show cased
Vendor lock in on SUN was removed
Now the clients can afford to have extra machines which helps to make the system failsafe
Organization was able to reduce cost by replacing mid-range Sparc/Solaris boxes with cluster of Xeon boxes running on SuSE Linux
High availability was achieved using clustered environment
