HiPC 2008

Workshop on Grid and Utility Computing (WUGC)

WUGC is organized under the auspices of the International Conference on High Performance Computing (HiPC), Bangalore, India.
December 2008

Scope

Until recently, application developers assumed a target environment that was homogeneous, reliable, secure and centrally managed. However, collaborative computing and data sharing paved the way for new modes of interaction, resulting in the usage of distributed resources for large-scale scientific research. Work within this community has led to the development of grid technologies that are being successfully adopted for scientific and enterprise computing.

In grid computing, geographically distributed and heterogeneous resources are virtualized as a unified whole. Grid computing, as a result, provides enormous opportunity in terms of resource sharing, maximization of resource utilization and virtualization of resources.

The evolution of Grid technologies resulted in Utility Computing where computation is provided as a utility. Enterprises are looking at a pricing and licensing model, using a managed, secure and on-demand infrastructure based on Grid technologies. Grid and Utility Computing are becoming an integral part of IT infrastructure. However, there are significant R&D challenges which need to be addressed while adopting this new technology.

Workshop on Grid and Utility Computing aims to understand the issues and research challenges in Grid and Utility Computing. Original and unpublished research contributions on (but not restricted to) the following subject categories are solicited:

  • Application development and migration in grid platforms
  • Security in Grid and Utility Computing
  • Policy mapping over grid
  • Virtualization techniques in Grid and Utility systems
  • Multi-tenancy of application and data in a grid environment
  • Metering and monitoring systems in Grid-based utility systems
  • Pricing issues in grid-based utility systems

Submission of Papers

Authors are invited to submit complete and original papers. Papers to be submitted should not have been previously published in another forum and should not be currently under review by another journal or conference. All submitted papers will be scrutinized for quality, correctness, originality and relevance. An accepted paper must be presented by one of the authors at the workshop venue. The accepted papers will be published as part of the HiPC conference proceedings on a CD-ROM. Formatting details of the papers are available at http://www.hipc.org/hipc2008.
