In India, every year several thousands of children lose their vision, partially or completely, to preventable causes. "Nanna Kannu" is an initiative that strives to ensure that every child who has a problem with his or her eye sight has access to healthcare and no child needlessly turns blind.
The program was conceptualized and instituted by Sankara hospital, who are pioneers in the field of community eye care. The program called the Happy Eyes project is supported by the supply of spectacles by Titan Company Ltd. The Sankara foundation takes care of surgical needs of student and strives to keep them free of eye disorders. Samarpan, the CSR wing of Infosys Bangalore Development Center, who are officially trained and certified, volunteer in the primarily screening of students. Sankara hospital and the NGO work in tandem to cover a large population of students from different districts, with support from the government education department. The project involved fund raising activities, primary and secondary screening for eye related problems followed by treatment for the identified children.
As part of its support to the program, Samarpan, has screened more than 24,500 students in the last 2 years and for 2019-2020 academic year we are screening nearly 125,000 students in Hyderabad and other districts in Karnataka, spending 17,500 volunteering hours.
