What was once a traditional manufacturing enterprise, Johnson Controls has today diversified into a solution driven organization. The company, which has been known to help make buildings smarter for more than three decades, has made a conscious move towards building solutions for clients.
James M Nannini, VP, North America, Johnson Controls, who heads the building wide systems integration business for North America, and has been with the company for the past 14 years, believes that consumers are not just focusing on the actual products that Johnson Controls delivers, but on the delivery of specific outcomes.
“And those outcomes can be around operational efficiency, energy utilization, productivity of employees, utilization of space. So, the move is towards more of a service model and less focus on the actual widgets that produce those outcomes,” he said in a conversation with Jasmeet Singh, EVP & Global Head of Manufacturing, Infosys.
For the company, while there is interoperability with a lot of the equipment, many of their customers also have legacy equipment from other manufacturers, which Johnson Controls is trying to integrate and harvest that data to drive specific outcomes across multiple platforms.
The company works with partners like Infosys to and finding specific and customized solutions for them, working out the implementation. Digital solutions, notes Nannini, are not just about framing a solution, but taking that solution and building upon it, building the intelligence, and driving additional outcomes from it for the clients.
“It is a challenge, but it’s also a very exciting time,” says Nannini.
