Bachelor's and Master's degree | Semantic Search | 12 | Keyword-based Semantic Search Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Pune (India) The project involves identifying entities associated with the user search keywords, and generating SPARQL queries to return tuples related to the entities by taking any Resource Description Framework (RDF) repository instances and user keywords as input. - The project has to assume that no ontology has been provided and in this particular case the application has to create the conceptual model based on the provided RDF repository - User input can have multiple words - some words/ phrases matching the names of entities in RDF store and some words that may not find an exact match. If words are not present in the RDF store, two approaches need to be followed. Firstly, Lucene index should be created on original content associated with the RDF tuples or on the textual fragment of the repository. Lucene based search should then be applied on the indexed documents and entities related to entered words should be extracted. The search engine should also handle fuzzy string matching and spell check. Secondly, the user may give synonyms for text present in RDF store or Lucene index. In this case, associated synonyms from word net should be extracted and provided to Lucene search engine for entity identification. Once the associated entities have been identified, find the connecting paths between the entities and generate relevant SPARQL queries to return tuples or relationships. |

The goal of the project is to develop algorithms to automatically identify bug inducing changes and build a prototype proof of the concept tool for the same. This is a research project which will deliver proof of concept implementation. |
Master's degree, Ph.D. | Research/ Development | 24 | Tracking Effects of Design Decisions on Design Artifacts Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) A software system is said to be well designed if it can justify the choice of being best possible alternative at all concerns. A preliminary requirement to this is to know all the design decisions taken during the course of refinement (from conceptual to implementable models) and to be able to identify the outcome of each decision. Since design refinement is an iterative activity, designers lose track of both design decisions and changes to artifacts resulting by their decisions. This leads to a complex and unstable design due to duplicate and conflicting or invalidating changes. Hence, a good design process needs a means to capture design decisions and trace specific changes to each element in design artifacts (models) with respect to each decision. Research in the domain of design decision has led to interesting knowledge management solutions to manage varied decisions and its rationales. The focus of this project is primarily to link decision models with design models. Defining this as a traceability problem, the scope of this project is to establish traceability between each decision and corresponding changes in design artifacts. Furthermore, for any open system software development OOAD is prime, we limit design artifacts to UML models such that a UML class diagram is used for conceptual model and is further refined. Adopting a more formal approach, we choose to perform refinement based on model transformations using QVT. Also, as we don't subscribe to any decision model, a suitable design decision model preferably based on OMT would best suite model transformation approach. However, though part of the problem is to manage decisions, we would like to restrict to only choosing a decision model and not define a decision management solution. |
Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, Ph.D. | Research/ Development | 12 | Automated Identification of Similar-fix Opportunities Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) In large complex business applications, considerable portion of similar code are dispersed across multiple files and packages. If a bug is identified in a portion of the code, it is likely that an identical bug exists in the other similar code portions. This happens when the code similarity is not explicit to developers thus they tend to miss out on fixing similar bug in other files. The goal of this project is to automatically detect locations in code where similar bug fix needs to be performed. This is a research project and the expected output should be a proof of concept implementation. |
Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, MBA, Ph.D. | Research/ Development | 24 | Quantitative Techniques for Preventive Software Maintenance Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) The majority of software maintenance work is reactive in nature. In reactive maintenance, corrective actions are taken to improve functionality after the failures/bugs are reported by the end-user. However, several studies have indicated that the cost of fixing a failure after it is found is around 40K USD. Therefore, there is a need to focus on prevention of bugs, so that we could prevent failures rather than correct it after occurrence. Employing such preventive methods and techniques on software applications before deployment is considered as Preventive Maintenance (PM). PM techniques also include, failure and bug prediction, regression testing, software rejuvenation, architecture conformance, and knowledge engineering techniques. These techniques utilize the past information available on the application like version histories, bug histories, and documentation to provide solutions that identify and/or estimate the occurrence of failures. As a step towards quantifying the Preventive Maintenance techniques and measures, our research aims to build a novel software quality metric called 'The Preventability Metric' that would be derived from a quantitative evaluation of the efficiency and effectiveness of several individual preventive techniques employed on the software before deployment. |
Master's degree, Ph.D. | Research/ Development | 12 | Meta-model Based Multi-view Consistency Checking Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) In the MDD and MDA-based approaches of development, the primary artifacts are models. Therefore, ensuring the correctness of such models is important in maintaining the quality of the final application. Meta-models play an important role in such scenarios. Meta-models precisely define the constructs and underlying well-formed rules for modeling languages. They provide a framework, which can be used to check consistency of models, and detect anomalies between valid and invalid instances of models. Since UML models make use of multiple diagrams presenting different views of systems one needs to check the correctness of each diagram, and also the consistency of different views. Problems that need to be addressed are Meta-model conformance and Multi-view consistency checking. While the meta-model conformance checks whether an instance of a model obeys all the constraints in a model, multi-view consistency verifies the consistency of different views of a model. Meta-model based development offers a promising way of managing the complexity of industrial scale software by describing a system in terms of different views. These views can then be described as instances of a single meta-model. Such views are usually not disjoint and it is essential that they are shown to be consistent. A weakness of meta-modeling tools is the lack of support for describing the behavior of models, as this is central to demonstrating the consistency of views. We have earlier modeled and solved the problem of checking meta-model conformance using a constraint solving oriented approach. In the present work, we would like to use the same framework to perform the consistency checking of views of UML models. |
Master's degree, Ph.D. | Research/ Development | 12 | Conformance Checking of Business Processes Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) Process aware information systems are widely used these days. These information systems monitor the process, record transaction logs and audit trails in the form of event logs. Simultaneously, many of these systems maintain reference models of processes. These reference models can predict the behavior of systems thus one needs to address an important problem. The concern is whether these event logs match/fit the reference process. This problem is more commonly known as ``conformance checking of processes''. In this work we would like to tackle this problem using concepts from Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP), which facilitates automated analysis using FDR model checker. |
Master's degree, Ph.D. | Research/ Development | 12 | Checking Complexity of BPM Processes Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) The Business Process Management Initiative (BPMI) has come out with a standard Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) for capturing pictorial representation of business processes, which is widely adopted by the industries for use in the early phases of systems development. BPMN defines a Business Process Diagram (BPD) (also called BPM process P) which is based on flowchart related ideas, and provides a graphical notation for business process modeling using objects like nodes, edges etc. An underlying formal representation of these processes can be provided in terms of petri nets and workflow nets. One can formulate trace/language inclusion and trace/language equivalence problem (in the domain of petri nets) for these BPMN processes. In this project we pursue theoretical problems related to complexity of a couple of decision problems related to trace equivalent problems for business processes. The final deliverables are problem solution, final presentation (.ppt file) and a consolidated report. |
Master's degree, Ph.D. | Research/ Development | 12 | An Authoring of Requirements Constrained by Ontology Extracted from domain artifacts Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) Requirements engineering is the branch of software engineering which deals with proper designing of functions and constraints of software systems. It is believed that the final quality of software systems delivered depends upon the requirements on which the software is built. Requirements elicitation is a critical part in any software development cycle. Any error that creeps in this stage can prove disastrous if detected in later parts of the development. There can be significant performance improvements as well as the opportunities for offering better correctness guarantees in downstream requirements engineering steps, if the knowledge implicit in domain artifacts is leveraged. In this project, we expect to extract such hidden knowledge from artifacts in a suitable way to elicit requirements so that we minimize the requirements deviations and inconsistencies. |

This project explores how value based software engineering can be combined with existing CMM project processes of Infosys and showcase the benefits thus gained. |
Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, MBA, Ph.D. | Research/ Development | 16 | Development of Methodology to Identify the Effect of Promotions in CPG Industry Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) The effect of promotions on the sales of a product is determined by decomposing the total sales volume into base sales volume and incremental sales volume. The method of determining base sales volume from total sales volume is a complex process in the context of CPG industry. The proposed methodology does decomposition of total sales volume into base sales volume and incremental sales volume by utilizing the information available in the percentage of sales through stores not participating in the promotional activities and non-promotion price. This is followed by tweaking of input values for the independent variables to determine the base sales volume from the total sales volume. The existing methods considers only time series data and estimate the base sales volume, this work deviates from the common approach and uses a powerful approach to decompose the base sales volume from the total sales volume. |

Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, MBA | Research/ Development | 12 | Comparative Study of Association Rule Mining on Transactional Data using Weka Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) Retaining old customers is the current preferred trend more than attracting new customers. Organizations are adopting different strategies to facilitate their customers in variety of ways, so that the customers keep on buying from them. Association Rule Mining (ARM) is a particular kind of data mining problem for large set of multidimensional data point. Association Rule Mining (ARM) is one of the strategies that have two-fold advantages to the business organization after applying the basket analysis. 1) It helps customers get all the related items from one place and that save their time from visiting different places of the store. 2) It helps organization in selling of items by placing items closer that are sold together. Different researchers have provided different algorithms for ARM and implemented in different data mining tools that helps user to properly and efficiently achieve their objectives. In this project we try to analyze or bring out a comparative study between some of the existing data mining tools. |
Bachelor's degree, Master's degree | Research/ Development | 12 | Project Marple - Core Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) Scientific approaches to solve complex problems, as well as modern business processes of the 21st century need to process massive structured and unstructured data in real time. This is only possible if very specialized algorithms harness the TFLOP/PFLOP power of multi-core /GPGPU. However, writing such algorithms are not easy. One needs to take care of task distribution and synchronization of tasks carefully. A programmer needs to design such an algorithm with small and relatively independent set of activities to exploit parallel execution. Management of data-dependency, optimal data transfer protocol between CPU and GPU, identification of various parts of the program that are data-parallel are extremely important. There are several specific internship project related to Marple. Outcome of these projects will be used to build a set of design that aids to implement, analyze, and transform applications for parallel hardware. These aids will be made available to the developers through commonly used design and programming workbenches such as VSTS and Eclipse. The specific areas we intend to investigate are: 1. Design time assistance: Algorithms to assist designers to write data parallel applications 2. Transformation assistance: Here we intend to build algorithms to identify implicit or explicit data-parallelisms that exist in a given sequential program and transform the program to port on GPU. We address various issues related to analysis, prediction and transformation of an existing code |

Masters, MBA, Ph.D. | Research/ Development | 16 | Development of algorithms for solving freight routing problem Industry: Infosys Labs Location: BANGALORE (India) The freight routing problem (FRP) finds a significant place in the context of logistics and distribution management domain. FRP is a real-life problem and it has to be solved to determine the best routing for shipments from an origin to a destination considering preference set by the user, user-defined conditions and system-defined conditions. For example, a shipment has to be start from some location in India and the shipment should reach Israel. The system should generate the best possible route by considering the conditions set by the user such as: - Shipment should not pass through the Ports located in Arabian Sea - Shipment can take any mode to reach the destination, but the shipment may change the mode of transport only one, say from ocean to land or vice versa, and so on The FRP is constrained by time windows, time schedules of other modes of transports (rail, trucks), availability of equipment (cranes, chassis, etc.), compliance of local governing laws, and so on. The objective is to determine the best route plans for each shipment requests based on the measure selected by the user. Typical measures such as shipment time, cost of transportation, etc., can be used to determine and rank the best possible routes. The FRP is a hard problem to solve, hence heuristic algorithm need to be developed to solve this class of problem. |
Master's degree, MBA, Ph.D. | Research/ Development | 12 | Application of Association Rule Mining Techniques to Enhance Web Services and Web Mining Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) Association rule mining (ARM) attempts to discover the hidden relationship between products based on the transactions stored in large datasets. Master's degree, Ph.D. | Research/ Development | 10 | Requirements Specification for Distributed Agile Development Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Pune (India) In distributed development, software development teams are often geographically distributed from their customers and end users. The demand for distributed development is on the rise due to high travel costs, local availability of skilled technical staff and the motivating factor is the desire to exploit a 24-hour work day. Distributed development with Agile process model may reduce production time. However, distributed development creates extensive communication and coordination challenges on the effectiveness of requirements engineering. A main challenge of distributed working environment is to derive effective software requirements specification (SRS). Requirements activities may be globally distributed as analysts are likely to be working with geographically distributed stakeholders and their teams may be distributed at various in-house locations. Hence, techniques are needed to facilitate and manage distributed requirements elicitation, high level modeling, requirements negotiation and manage teams that are not just distributed geographically but also in terms of time zone, culture and language. The aim of this project is to address this challenge and develop techniques/ methods to derive effective SRS for distributed Agile development in distributed working environment. |
Bachelor's degree, Master's degree | Research/ Development | 10 | Real Time Context Aware Communication Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Pune (India) Software development organizations have started adopting Follow-the-Sun (FTS) approach to deliver software products quickly. FTS is an approach in which software development work is done around the clock across time zones. The software development teams are geographically distributed across different time zones, the teams may be from different organizations, and different work cultures. To support express delivery of software products, there is a need to devise techniques to reduce communication time between teams when passing on tasks. The main aim of this project is to develop and generate automatic real time context aware communication from day-to-day software development tasks such as coding and testing and use them in distributed development and other development environments. |
Master's degree, Ph.D. | Research/ Development | 12 | Authoring of Requirements Constrained by Ontology Extracted from Domain Artifacts Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) Requirements engineering is the branch of software engineering that deals with proper designing of functions and constraints of software systems. Requirements elicitation is a critical part in any software development cycle. It is believed that the final quality of software systems delivered depends upon the requirements on which the software is built. Any error that creeps in at this stage can prove disastrous if detected in later parts of the development cycle. There can be significant performance improvements by leveraging on knowledge implicit in domain artifacts. This project aims at extracting such hidden knowledge from artifacts in a way so as to elicit requirements with minimal deviations and inconsistencies. |

Master's degree, MBA, Ph.D. | Security | 16 | Security Control Evaluation Method for Cloud Environment Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Hyderabad (India) In a multitenant environment, companies hosting data in a single environment are unsure about the security of data management practices on a day-to-day basis. Cloud providers use management tools to have complete view of performances and security control status of customer data. However, reports are not always shared with cloud customers. It is important from customers' point of view to have a more comprehensive snapshot of his security control status of data within the cloud. This concern becomes more crucial when customers use more than one cloud service and want readily available and demonstrable control capabilities with respect to confidentiality, integrity and availability. In all cases, responsibility of ensuring the protection of end-users' data lies with the cloud service company. Interns must propose a security evaluation model and dashboard useful for cloud customers to have a realistic view of their security posture in a cloud environment. |
Master's degree, MBA, Ph.D. | Social Networking | 12 | Community Discovery in Online Social Networks Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) A social system is composed of people who interact and mutually influence each other’s behavior and are bounded by a set of interrelated activities that together constitute a single entity. Social systems exist at all levels such as people, families, organizations, communities, societies, and cultures. Communities are social networks that require a sensible decomposition of the graph into sub-graphs, where some nodes in each sub-graph have more to do with each other than with outsiders. This way community structures and overlapping structures can be detected. |

Master's degree, Ph.D. | Social Networking | 12 | Modeling of Online Social Systems Industry: Infosys Labs Location: Bangalore (India) A social network cannot be rightly (or rather fully) represented by merely a social graph that connects nodes (users) with the other nodes (connections/friends). There should be some model (some kind of integrated graph) that links users with their interests and other entities (e.g., brand, ad, games, etc.) they like and connects different users with common interests. This graph/model will enable linking of a user to services of his interest and connect different users with common interests. This type of model would reveal many useful insights like user- user relations, use - brand relations, and brand - brand relations. These kinds of insights might: (i) Help companies to improve the marketing of their products toward specific group of people like users with loyalty to a brand. (ii) Assist social network site to better targeting online services (advertisements, etc.) |
