Session details 1
Topic: Testing 3Vs (Volume variety and velocity) of big data

Date: December 5, 2012
Time: 11.30 – 12.00 IST
Speakers: Mahesh Gudipati, Project Manager, Independent Validation and Testing Services, Infosys
Jaya Bhagavathi Bhallamudi, Senior Project Manager, Independent Validation and Testing Services, Infosys
Shanthi Rao, Group Project Manager, Independent Validation and Testing Services, Infosys

Session description

Big data is one of the most discussed topics in recent times and implementation of big data now tops the to-do lists of most CIOs. Taming big data is essential to unearth hidden information that could prove valuable to an enterprise. New technologies such as Hadoop, HDFS, NoSQL DBs are evolving to help enterprises mine as well as store huge volumes of data. The big data market is expected to grow exponentially in the next few years.

'Big data' is a generic term used to describe the voluminous amount of unstructured, structured and semi-structured data. Volume, variety and velocity (3Vs) are the three dimensions of big data. This session highlights the various approaches for validating the 3Vs of big data.

In this session, the speaker will highlight how the role of the tester is becoming even more complex to imagine in a futuristic system and provide an innovative and smart QA solution. The speaker will share his ideas and views on the journey forward for validating tomorrow's enterprise and how it cannot be completed without innovation, co-creation and collaboration.

Session details 3

Topic: Specialized testing focus in agile
Date: December 5, 2012
Time: 16.35 – 17.05 IST
Speakers: Harleen Bedi, Senior Project Manager, Independent Validation and Testing Services, Infosys
Sujatha Badri Narayanan, Senior Project Manager, Independent Validation and Testing Services, Infosys

Session description

In many agile projects, due to various reasons, the main focus of testing remains on verifying functional requirements and automating the key functional scenarios. Many other aspects of testing are generally missed out or get ignored in agile development due to reasons such as:

  • It is easier to define stories which talk about functional aspects.
  • Conventionally, most of the specialized testing is performed in the end product or when the system has attained a level of stability.

With changing technology and business needs, where performance, security, compliance and data integrity are extremely critical, it is quite risky to delay these aspects till late in the project life cycle. Any type of testing that is done in a traditional environment can be done under agile development as well. What it needs is careful planning and selection of the types of tests in advance. Apart from upfront planning for these types of tests, another important aspect to be considered is the skill set of the testers on the team.

This session will cover some simple techniques that will help bring specialized testing into the agile world.

Session details 4

Topic: Performance management for cloud-based applications
Date: December 6, 2012
Time: 12.00 – 12.30 IST
Speakers: Madhu Tanikella, Independent Validation and Testing Services, Infosys

Session description

With the advent of cloud computing, which promises significant reduction in capex and opex (along with other benefits such as elasticity and pay per use), organizations across the globe are planning to move some of their applications and infrastructure to the cloud architecture. However, organizations are also speculating about potential challenges, especially the performance and security of their applications and data placed in cloud environments. This speaker will highlight the aspects of application performance management in a cloud-based architecture and enlist the performance challenges for different cloud service models (i.e., IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) and deployment models (i.e., public and private clouds), and suggest pointers to address them.

Session details 5

Topic: Workload modeling and workload modeler in performance testing
Date: December 6, 2012
Time: 12.30 – 13.00 IST
Speakers: Amith Kumar Arangi, Test Analyst, Independent Validation and Testing Services, Infosys
Suresh Suru, Test Analyst, Independent Validation and Testing Services, Infosys

Session description

The performance of applications, which are ready to go live, needs to be monitored for varying loads in real time. Generally a beta version is made available to end users prior to the actual deployment. All the logs and other related data pertaining to the application are monitored, examined and the results obtained. Some varying patterns can be observed here due to application-specific behavior at varying loads. In such situations, a workload modeling technique needs to be used to arrive at an optimal throughput. In this session, the speaker will share his views and highlights how the performance tests carried out using this model simulates the performance behavior of the application.
