Session details

Topic: Testing in Large Transformational Programs
Date: November 5, 2012
Time: 14.30 – 15.10 EDT
Speakers: James Clutterbuck, Test Strategy and Operations Senior Manager, Testing and Release Services, National Australia Bank
Pravin Kashid, Senior Project Manager, Independent Validation and Testing Services, Infosys Limited

Session description
Large transformational programs involve significant changes to business processes, as well as coordination with multiple business units, vendors and service providers, and usually run for longer durations (12 to 18 months). Testing involved in such programs face challenges associated with:

  • End-to-end business processes testing across large number of systems
  • Ensuring adequate test coverage
  • Meeting complex test environment and test data requirements
  • Concurrently running multiple test phases, test governance, and objective test metrics
  • Getting better insight into program health and ensuring quality before production

This session highlights why test teams struggle with such programs, and more importantly, describes how key testing best practices and an effective framework can ensure successful implementation of large transformational programs.

Topic: Enterprise Test Data Management Solution
Date: November 6, 2012
Time: 10.30 – 11.10 EDT
Speakers: Kerry Butler, Test Practice Lead, AMP Financial Services
Karthik Ramaprasad, Senior Project Manager, Independent Validation and Testing Services, Infosys Limited

Session description
The ever-increasing complexity and scale of IT applications has made quality and reliability of paramount importance. However, delivering the same through testing is becoming a challenge. Test teams not only have to follow exact testing methodologies, but also ensure accuracy of test data. They also need to ensure that the tests correctly reflect the production situations, both functionally and technically.

Test data management (TDM) is the governance process of identifying, acquiring, conditioning, populating and maintaining test data during test planning, test preparation, and test execution phases.

In this session, experts focus on typical challenges faced by organizations in test data management and ways to overcome them.

Some of the best practices for test data management are:

  • Test data management as a managed, centralized IT service
  • Implement appropriate data masking techniques to prevent sensitive data exposure and ensure data privacy
  • Data sub-setting to accommodate scaled down and multiple test environments, which in turn scale down the infrastructure
  • Test data creation or generation for testing applications when production data cannot be used, thus enabling testing team to engage in the initial stage of product life cycle
  • Archive the data from multiple databases with respect to accuracy, completeness and data integrity, which tends to reduce the data extraction time
