Infosys Releases its 11th Sustainability Report

Infosys, in its continuous pursuit to be a sustainability leader has released its 11th Annual Sustainability Report today. The report provides an in-depth understanding of the economic, social and environmental practices Infosys undertakes across its business in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative G4 (Comprehensive) guidelines.

Infosys continuously strives to improve energy efficiency, increase the use of renewable energy, enhance water sustainability, reduce waste-to-land-fills, and contribute to biodiversity driven by innovation and focused efforts. The company strives to build strategic alliances and forge partnerships with industry bodies and consortiums at the local, national and international levels.

Conservation of energy

  • Infosys has reduced per capita electricity consumption by 53% (against the baseline year 2008).
  • 43.7% of the company’s electricity requirements (equating to more than 100 million units) is sourced from renewable sources. Today, the company has an installed capacity of 46.1 megawatt (MW) of solar across India.
  • Infosys has reduced demand for connected electrical load by 32 MW through retrofits across its campuses over the last eight years.
  • The company has 19 LEED platinum-rated buildings, 4 GRIHA 5-star rating buildings, and 2 LEED EB (existing building) campuses with the highest levels of green certification. Its green building footprint extends to 11.7 million square feet. Additionally, 10.8 million square feet is undergoing certification.

As part its advocacy efforts, Infosys has published an Energy Efficient Buildings Toolkit in partnership with World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) replete with case studies from its campuses across India

Carbon Emission

  • In line with the company’s commitment to become carbon neutral and focus on social development alongside carbon emission reduction, Infosys has implemented six community-level carbon offset projects which included one household biogas project, four high-efficiency improved biomass cook stove projects, and one rural electrification project.
  • As of fiscal 2018, Infosys covered over 1,600 villages in six districts across Karnataka, Rajasthan, Odisha, Maharashtra and Jammu & Kashmir through the household biogas project, high-efficiency improved biomass cook stove projects, and the rural electrification project.
  • Through these projects Infosys reduced carbon emission by 153,309 tCO2e as of March 31, 2018 bringing cheer to over 1,00,000 families in rural India.

Conservation of water

  • The company has reduced its per capita water consumption by 57% in 2017-18 (against the baseline year 2008), and its YoY reduction is 20%.
  • In the current year, Infosys has recycled close to 2.5 million kl of water – this amounts to 83% of the total water withdrawal.

Scientific waste disposal

  • Infosys has 17 biogas and composting plants that treat more than 3.6 million kgs/annum of organic waste.
  • 1.2 million kgs/annum of STP sludge is treated at the Bangalore and Mysore campuses through automated solar dryers.
  • The company’s Pune, Trivandrum and Hyderabad campuses are also incorporating these dryers to treat a further 1.4 million kgs/annum of STP sludge.

The report highlights Infosys’ sustainable practices aimed at water consumption, renewable energy, carbon emission, wastewater management and green buildings. By setting the highest standards of environmental sustainability across its campuses, Infosys is reducing consumption, setting efficiency standards and ensuring minimal impact on the environment.
