Enterprise Architecture Office Transformation

Enterprise Architecture Office Transformation for one of the largest Life Insurers in the world

The client

The client is the largest mutual life insurance company in the US, providing insurance, investment, and retirement solutions along with expert guidance to help customers achieve lifelong financial well-being.

The client’s strategic architecture group is responsible for crafting the On IT Strategy & Roadmap undertaking high-value architecture work, including but not limited to defining the Enterprise Architecture Operating Model, Enterprise Portfolio & Strategic Knowledge Management and End to end Enterprise Architecture Strategy and Governance to support the new IT Operating Model & Roadmap.

With multiple architecture frameworks and methodologies to choose from the industry (TOGAF, Gartner, Zachman, CEB etc.), the Chief Architect was looking to establish an Enterprise Architecture Transformation Office to help define their One IT Strategy & Roadmap, which was lacking a structured, non-intrusive, Enterprise Architecture Management and Governance approach.

Our solution

Infosys leveraged our SMART EA framework to develop an architecture review board and governance model. Our pragmatic approach leveraged insights based on rich experience and collective knowledge base.

Infosys established an “Enterprise Architecture Think Tank" in India. The Think Tank was predominantly composed of experienced Infosys Enterprise Architects to work closely with the Chief Architect’s office in the US.

This was a unified team of Client and Infosys staff operating across two continents defining architecture strategy and governance across the Enterprise, LOBs and Shared Services collaboratively to understand needs, stakeholder maps and relationship management.

A combination of Enterprise Architects, Portfolio Architects, Domain Architects, Data Architects and Infrastructure Architects formed a solid grounds for the Enterprise Architecture Think Tank focusing on the following strategic initiatives:

  • Define and Elaborate Business Capability Architecture Model
  • Define and Elaborate the Enterprise Architecture Transformation Office Operating Model
  • Define and Elaborate the organization’s One IT Strategy & Roadmap for 2020
  • Define and Elaborate the Enterprise Data Management Strategy
  • Define and Elaborate the Service Oriented Enterprise Strategy

The Infosys team was also responsible for setting up and defining the target state enterprise architecture model for the Investments Management LOB as a pilot for the larger Enterprise. As part of the pilot Infosys team lead the LOB Architecture team to:

  • Design and Create Enterprise Architecture Repository and Portfolio Analysis Tool (Software AG Alfabet) for Enterprise Architecture Management and Governance
    • Define and Elaborate Business Capability Architecture, Application Architecture, Information Architecture and align Technology Infrastructure Model as applied to Investments Management
  • Define, Elaborate and co-chair the Investments Management’s Architecture Review Board

Infosys successfully transformed the client’s EA practice leveraging our talent, frameworks and rich experience and technology breadth and depth. As a result, the client was available to leverage valuable insights and real time contributions to its transformation journey. This engagement helped set a successful example for a “Sustainable Architecture Think Tank” execution model. Some of the benefits include:

  • Significant costs saves in longer run through execution through GDM
  • Continuous delivery of value through a stable core team with flexibility through a variable contingent that gets adjusted based on demand fluctuation
  • Reduction in turnaround time for IT impacts analysis for organization initiatives through effective use of EA tool
  • Significant automation in continuous capture of enterprise’s architecture and ease of creation of various views across stakeholders.
