Shawn Wharton

CIO, Trading and Shipping IT&S, BP

Shawn Wharton is the Chief Information Officer for the BP’s Global Supply & Trading division known as Integrated Supply & Trading (IST). As the CIO, Shawn is accountable for end-to-end Information & Technology services provided to the business. He has accountability for providing technology leadership and vision to the business, as well as delivering and operating IT platforms that drive business value.

More recently, Shawn has also played a key role in helping IST deliver its key digital and innovation agenda. As the Executive lead, Shawn created the IST’s Connected Innovation strategy and framework. Additionally, he played a key role in helping to design and setup IST’s digital organization known as VISTA.

Shawn’s main accountabilities include:

• Delivering IST’s technology agenda working with the IST executive team ensuring strong stakeholder relationships and a business aligned delivery agenda.
• The IST Executive accountable for ensuring an integrated strategy and delivery approach between our IT, digital and data imperatives
• Developing IST’s information technology strategy and supporting roadmaps which deliver against BP’s overall IT strategies and IST business strategy.
• Maintaining the operational integrity and silent running of our IST technology estate
• Continuous improvement of the portfolio through the quality delivery of new investment projects and the associated rationalization of existing platforms

Prior to joining BP, Shawn worked in consulting from 1997 to 2004 with a focus on the trading and risk management industry which afforded him the opportunity to work with many different companies in this space. Prior to consulting, Shawn worked as a Manufacturing Engineer from 1995 to 1997 after graduating from Oklahoma State University with an Industrial Engineering & Management degree.
