The team was excited as they were restless. They were on the brink of signing a deal with a major British gas and electric company. After endless rounds of discussions, Infosys had been shortlisted for the final round along with a few more IT majors. The remit? Running the British client's IT services. A rock-bottom price was the easiest way to seal the deal. But was there something more that could be done? The principal consultant called on our Australia and US offices for help, and a radical solution emerged - Infosys would provide a digital solution.

Not only would they run the client's IT services, they would also absorb some of the client's employees onto their own rolls. Over the next year, Infoscions across the world, and across functions collaborated to set up a facility close to the client's office, had it ISO graded and transitioned employees from the client to Infosys seamlessly. The principal consultant's takeaway? “It's a treat to create digital solutions for our clients, not just deliver IT.” Happy client, happy employees, and a partnership of trust. That's surpassing client expectations consistently.

Few people like to talk about their failures. But one leader loves to speak about failing to land the first ever deal they worked on, because it established his faith in Infosys. Barely five months after joining Infosys, they were asked to head pitch for a large transformational project for an insurance company. No insurance company in the US had ever embarked on a journey like that, so the stakes were high. Were the deal to come through, it would give them career a leg-up. After multiple rounds of pitching, only three companies remained in the fray, including Infosys.

They could have taken the easy way out but chose to push back, insisting on the approach their team had outlined, because it was the right way to do things. Infosys lost the pitch narrowly. But he maintains victory. “Our passion for continuous learning at Infosys encourages me to reach for the moon,” he says. Five years on, that passion remains unshaken. And there have been several other wins since.

Get the deal at all costs, or push for a solution that is right - but one that might cost you the deal? That's just the question one IT strategist faced in the final stages of negotiations with a client. Dropping the price and getting a signature on the dotted line was the easier option. But somewhere deep down, she knew that what the client was proposing would not work in the long run.

She pressed on, insisting that the client reassess their requirement and consider the solution she had proposed, albeit at a higher price. She recounts that experience as one of her most trying ones. The solution she proposed made things more difficult for her team, but the lower cost alternative would have caused operational difficulties, putting the client as well as the Infosys team in a spot. "I'm proud that we value integrity over easy success," she says, "But for us, it is the only way."

Two decades ago, when a new client project required Infosys to use Java-a new software then-a team of 8-9 were given 2 months to learn and deliver. One junior, went up to his manager and said, “I'm ready to learn, but will you trust me and help me deliver in 2 months?” The manager replied with a smile, 'I don't have a choice, do I? I am the only one who knows this technology right now. If we are to win, we must all learn'. And so, the team decided to start from the basics. To learn together. And to deliver, on time.

Infosys eventually lost the project on a technicality. But the manager chose to congratulate his team for learning the language, rather than berate them for losing the deal. After the project, the junior said, “At Infosys, I am heard and that makes me feel like a rock star.” After all, many similar projects would come their way in the future. And having a team that was well-versed in Java would definitely be an advantage. A new way of appreciating our own performance was created at Infosys. Another example of growing capabilities was set.

Work-life balance has always been talked about. But what if one were forced to choose between work and life? What happens to the balance then? One mom faced a similar dilemma when her newborn was diagnosed with prenatal hepatitis. Choosing to focus on her child's wellbeing, she rued the lost opportunities as she saw her colleagues advance while she stagnated in her career. Her confidence took a beating. She felt life was not being fair to her and thought of giving up and walking away. Until her manager of 12 years who knew her capabilities and potential decided to make things right for her.

He came up to her with a new role of an L&D Lead that seemed perfect for her situation. She had little experience in the field, but the role also included a promotion. Would she be interested? Her colleagues egged her on. After all, what was there to lose? That was five years ago. Armed with a degree in engineering, one young man chose a career in academics over a lucrative alternative in the corporate world. He believed strongly that the best way to build a better world was to impart knowledge to the young minds that would inherit it. That was until he saw the potential of a position advertised at Infosys. Here at last was an opportunity to leverage modern learning-management platforms like LeX, to disseminate knowledge in a much more focused and effective manner than teaching at a college. He joined as a core team member for a Competency Development team. He experienced the power of automation first-hand. Here was a platform that was robust as it was agile, helping pinpoint individual learning needs and tailoring a learning experience for thousands of Infoscions.

Five years later, he and his team continue to improve LeX to create a learning platform that's setting new standards in the industry and making a difference to thousands of Infoscions. He says, “Infosys taught me to fly and now I'm soaring.”
