"The adoption of Big Data based Analytics solutions is extremely relevant and can enable the logistics industry to drive improved asset efficiencies and deliver near real-time last mile visibility."

The Logistics and Distribution Industry is faced with unprecedented disruption. The stupendous growth of the digital economy, coupled with Uber-like last mile services have caused a massive shift that cuts across all key logistics services. For asset owning carriers, the pressure to improve asset predictability and last mile visibility has become a paramount challenge.

Logistics service providers already have access to information in the form of updates from their ecosystem of suppliers, regulators, customers, and weather forecasters. They also have access to information from their internal stakeholders such as, sales, customer service, operations and finance. They simply lack the tools needed to get actionable insights from all this data. The adoption of Big Data based Analytics solutions is extremely relevant and can enable the logistics industry to drive improved asset efficiencies and deliver near real-time last mile visibility.

"Adding intelligence to this information will help service-providers with generating accurate ETA and scheduling timely maintenance, among others. Even a 24-hour horizon view enhances efficiency significantly."

With available data from various mediums like GPS devices, telephones/mobile devices, manual input, equipment readers, beacons and mobile scanners and equipment/asset themselves (powered by IoT), asset-owning service providers are better equipped to predict a trend. They can leverage open source data platforms, like the Infosys Information Platform, to process the terabytes of data and create data lakes to determine patterns and anomalies. These patterns can be better governed with predictive analysis/intelligence-based on rules to determine, 'how long an equipment has been in service?'; 'where is the shipment in my network or in the world?'; 'how far has the asset travelled?'; and 'has it met the minimum miles required before maintenance?' Adding intelligence to this information will help service-providers with generating accurate ETA and scheduling timely maintenance, among others. Even a 24-hour horizon view enhances efficiency significantly.

"Actionable insights from near real-time event repository will truly differentiate their businesses. Big data analytics can make this real."

Global logistics business owners are struggling to find actionable insights from terabytes of data gathered from various sources. In turn, they are not able inform their customers about shipment delays, take proactive steps to improve delivery commitments, and predict the life of operational assets, such as containers, railcars, yard equipment, vessels, trucks etc. As a result, logistics service providers are unable to maximize yield and retain customers. Moreover, the absence of this capability is hindering their ability to launch new and differentiated products in the market.

Global logistics business owners seek dashboard/alert capabilities, which will give them near real-time visibility anytime anywhere. For example, if they had the exact status of the container/rail car/shipment, they could initiate a set of actions including, rerouting the shipment to meet customer commitments or reduce costs, position empty capacity to meet maximum contribution per unit and maximize asset and capacity utilization to improve the information experience and predictability. Actionable insights from near real-time event repository will truly differentiate their businesses. Big data analytics can make this real.
