Ericsson’s Take on Enterprise 5G in the AI Era
Insights
- Enterprise 5G is emerging as the simplest way to securely connect employees to cloud and AI services at scale.
- In the AI era, connectivity is no longer just about access but about delivering secure, ubiquitous IT services across the enterprise.
- The next frontier for 5G is not just IoT or smartphones, but enabling always-connected laptops and knowledge workers.
At MWC 2026, Sebastian Tolstoy of Ericsson discusses how enterprise 5G is evolving from a telecom capability into a foundational layer for modern IT. The conversation highlights a shift from traditional connectivity models to a more seamless, secure approach that supports AI deployment and cloud transformation. While 5G has already proven its value in consumer and industrial use cases, a major untapped opportunity lies in extending it to everyday enterprise devices like laptops. By simplifying connectivity and strengthening security, enterprise 5G has the potential to redefine how organizations connect their workforce to critical digital services, making it a key enabler of the AI-driven enterprise.

Samad Masood:
Tell me, what is enterprise 5G connect? It’s quite a simple idea really, isn’t it?
Sebastian Tolstoy:
It's all about connecting the enterprise over 5G. That’s what we’re trying to do in a much more simple and convenient way.
Why 5G during this AI-era?
Sebastian Tolstoy:
Last year AI was about to happen, but now AI is happening. And it’s at the forefront of everything. Together with AI deployment and cloud transformation, security comes up as a very important aspect. So the IT task today is really how can I, as an IT department, provide a ubiquitous IT service that securely connects my employees to cloud and AI services in one simple way, and that's really where 5G comes in as that technology that can solve that problem.
Extending 5G beyond smartphones
Today, we have been very successful in adopting 5G services more for like a personal service for our smartphones, but also for industrial cases, you know, IoT and so on. But the obvious case that is in front of all of us is people like us, you know, knowledge workers that have laptops. Why is the laptop not connected?
Why is 5G not the primary technology for Enterprise IT? That's the opportunity that we want to unlock for this business.
