IQNITE conferences have developed into an important instrument of thought and idea exchange within the community, and provide the most comprehensive overview of current trends in software quality management and testing.
"Industrialization - Software Quality 2020" is the theme for IQNITE 2011. The conference will focus on the following issues:
- What quality and testing methods are efficient and cost effective?
- What will be the role of QA in the future (10 years)?
- What ideas and visions will shape software quality?
At the event, Infosys and Barclays jointly present a session titled “Enterprise Class Implementation of Model Based Testing.”
Topic: Enterprise Class Implementation of Model Based Testing
Speakers: Paul Haywood, Barclays Bank,
Arpit Kaushik, Independent Validation Services, Infosys Technologies
Date: May 26, 2011
Time: 11:15-12:00 CET
Today, the industry has moved on from Manual Testing to GUI automation, middleware automation and automated test management. However, most automation solutions address only 20% to 30% of the testing lifecycle: scripting, execution and management of test cases. The phase that comprises of test case design and creation is unaddressed.
Model Based Testing (MBT) attempts to address this problem by introducing automation early on in the lifecycle. In the MBT approach, first a model is built directly at the requirements stage and test cases are automatically generated based on the model. Further, for any changes in requirements and underlying test cases, changes are made to the model rather than individual test cases, solving the major problem of script maintenance and modification.
Despite all these interesting abilities, the uptake of this novel approach has been largely limited to the engineering and telecom world. Enterprises, even less so Banks, have stayed away from MBT, despite all its promised benefits.
When Barclays embarked on a major multi-year transformation program, it realized that automation was the only way to meet timelines and budgets, while ensuring an error free platform launch. Traditional approaches to automation would only go a limited way. Barclays realized a radical approach was required and that’s when it was decided that MBT needs to be adopted. Working with Infosys, Barclays implemented what is perhaps the world's largest enterprise-class implementation of MBT.
The presentation takes you through the project's journey - objectives, approach, implementation lessons learnt, what worked, what didn't, and how the team fared, comparing the benefits envisaged originally and what benefits were actually delivered. More importantly it uses the experience to show how MBT can be used successfully in enterprise class projects.
