Agenda and discussion topics
08:30 a.m. – 09:00 a.m. | Networking over breakfast
09:00 a.m. – 09:15 a.m. | “Set the stage” Address by Harry Fox (CIO, CareFirst) and Gloria Romeo (Executive Sponsor)

10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. | Reimagining the healthcare payer
Thinking like a retailer, understanding the different segments of the population and its members, and tailoring services accordingly will help healthcare payers to engage with members more effectively. At the same time, health insurance payers must also strengthen their regular B2B channels – brokers and employers – to ensure that they can provide the best choice of healthcare plans and coverage at an optimal cost. The discussion will deliberate on which key members – broker, provider, and employer-centric elements – CareFirst should focus on, in order to reimagine the delivery of healthcare services.
10:30AM – 11:00AM | Designing a Constituent-focused digital strategy in the healthcare world
Change is hard. Transformation is even harder. When it comes to the digital challenge, most organizations are changing, not transforming. They are digitizing existing processes to take out cost, or using new technologies to increase customer convenience. This type of change is incremental and is no longer sufficient. The challenge of today is that businesses need to disrupt their own industries, channels, and customer interactions before a start-up does it for them.
The discussion will focus on the key building blocks of a digital strategy framework which can facilitate the full digitization of the entire enterprise — including channels, processes, and analytics that will enable entirely new operating models for healthcare customers.
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | Interactive Digital Lab – creating the right digital opportunities for success (60 minutes)
Digital and design are becoming entwined in the success of healthcare outcomes. How to best identify a business problem and how to solve it digitally?
This will be an interactive workshop to investigate how these disciplines can be used to reimagine digital solutions at CareFirst. We will also lead an interactive group exercise utilizing Design Thinking tools and techniques to unlock innovative ideas. It will focus on problem identification and problem solving in the healthcare sector, and will empower you to make smart decisions and the right investments for digital.
12:00 p.m. – 01:00 p.m. | Panel discussion over lunch (45+15 minutes)
Everyone in healthcare, payers included, is striving for the triple goals of improved health outcomes, better patient care, and lowered health costs. Engagement with the various stakeholders are critical for achieving these triple goals. Engagement requires interaction and interaction requires technology.
Standing up a portal may qualify by definition as stakeholder engagement, but certainly won’t fit the bill long term. Increased levels of engagement will be the primary means by which payers are able to adjust behavior and increase accountability. Finding new channels to drive engagement will be essential and most of those will be based on technology.
The panel will discuss the potential for digital health and what a tighter integration into the greater healthcare economy could mean for payers, providers, members, brokers and employers. It will also discuss innovations that have changed the healthcare landscape and advanced the industry and the challenges of investing in healthcare technology.
