This sportswear manufacturer wanted to improve the user experience of their connectivity platforms. The aim was to upgrade their existing on-premise intranet portal to boost collaboration, cohesion, and productivity in teams.

Client wanted to refurbish their intranet-portal with Office 365 and steer towards cloud deployments. Infosys integrated Office 365-toolbox for a key module of client’s existing on-premise intranet-portal to create a hybrid setup with demarcation between apps and workspaces. An App Center helped consolidate the intranet-Portal, Office 365, and mobile apps.

Key Challenges

  • Low load times and performance lags, leading to staleness of content
  • The existing federated hybrid search approach entailed maintaining a large number of servers, leading to a high total cost of ownership
  • Low consumption of existing content coupled with the lack of an interactive interface
  • Unsatisfactory user experience for mobile devices across browsers and operating systems.

The Solution

Developing a hybrid intranet portal with SharePoint On-Premise and Office 365

What did we do?

The overall process to build the new intranet started by collaborating with clients on a design-thinking based approach and brainstorming over the various possibilities and challenges, backed by our offerings under Infosys Cobalt.

  • Developed the backend of the News communication center part of the intranet portal using Microsoft Azure with a globally distributed, geo-redundant Cosmos DB.
  • Configured Hybrid Search configured between on premise and online SharePoint workspaces.
  • Developed business critical custom features around the new intranet to enable end users to ask questions anonymously and to subscribe to their favorite news channels.
  • Revamped the UI to make the portal responsive across multiple browsers and screen sizes (320px, 576px, 992px, 1200px, 1600px & above) including desktops, tablets, laptops and phone (Android, iOS etc.). Mobile first responsive approach was adopted using Bootstrap as the responsive UI framework.

Optimizing performance, cost and effort

  • Identify the business pain points and brainstorm the best possible solutions.
  • Devise effective strategies to implement the changes with minimum business impact.
  • Optimize the solution components in terms of performance, cost and effectiveness.
  • Create reusable components and automate to save efforts and prevent manual intervention.
