Mobile Enablement of Transmission and Distribution Operations

The Client

The client is a major electrical utility company in the US. Its functions include distribution and supply of electricity to a wide range of customers including small domestic customers and medium/large commercial and industrial users. It also has generating capacities from interests in nuclear, hydroelectric and fossil-fueled power plants.

Business Needs

The applications used by the client in field tools were not based on standard architecture and lacked consistency. Common functionality was repeated across applications and there were inefficient means of data replication resulting in a large volume of redundant data on field tools. Also addition of new applications to the system was a cumbersome task which led to high maintenance cost.

The client wanted common mobility architecture for T&D operations which would help them improve productivity and efficiency through process automation.

The challenge was to integrate distinct customer requirements into a coherent strategy to derive measures of customer satisfaction. It was also important to map the processes from the customers' perspective, understanding the different nuances of the client's unique needs.

Our Solution

Infosys conducted a thorough requirements analysis and applied different industry best practices to develop a mobile framework and future state architecture. The salient components of the Infosys solution included:

  • Common application framework for mobile field tool
  • Wireless LAN and location services
  • Wireless application gateway
  • Integration framework for integrating mobile applications with backend systems

The key benefit the client derived from this solution was increased efficiency and ease of maintenance by having:

  • Common mobile framework based on standard .Net architecture
  • Common communication network for enterprise
