End-to-end test automation for a next-generation network of a leading UK telecommunications service provider


Client situation

Having introduced a portfolio of next-generation broadband services, the client wanted to reach millions of users in a short period. Realizing this goal seemed difficult, as the client’s existing supplier could not meet delivery parameters like cycle time (CT) and right first time (RFT). This curtailed the client’s ability to meet their desired parameters for time to market and service quality.

Infosys was engaged by the client for their network renewal. By gainfully deploying CRAFT framework-based automation solutions for specific pain-points, Infosys would take end-to-end test ownership of the client’s broadband domain, in addition to providing technical / process thought leadership. The client was relying on this transformation to achieve their goals in aggressive timelines.

Our solution

At the beginning of the engagement, Infosys needed to address these issues:

  • Overcome high cycle time (CT) of test execution, which was resulting in high overall cost
  • Fix the inaccurate result reporting in the existing scripts, which led to low confidence in automation
  • Address rigid tester APIs, which posed more challenges in achieving cycle time reduction and efficient automation coverage

To overcome the above challenges, Infosys designed and implemented a holistic test strategy:

  • Leveraged benefits of framework-based test automation approach to maximize re-use and reduce cycle time
  • Designed and implemented Infosys vAutomate (Network Services Test and Automation Framework) that enhanced automation coverage in a short duration
  • Introduced the concept of parallel test execution to reduce the cycle time
  • Performed risk-based test case analysis to optimize the number of test cases executed
  • Improved reporting structure to get data from different network points, thus increasing the confidence in automated script and also easy troubleshooting
  • Adopted an ‘early’ automation strategy to overcome the deficiencies of the traditional ‘regression-only’ automation theory
  • Automated new complex features with little effort by assembling together the standard modules/libraries created by the framework

Infosys approach focused on automation of broadband regression test scenarios for the client’s next-generation network. This included:

  • Creation of test automation scripts using TCL / QTP for existing and future testing requirements
  • Reduction in manual intervention without compromising on the accuracy of the test results
  • Modularization of the test scripts to make it adaptable for future testing requirements
