Openreach, a subsidiary of the BT Group, operates the fiber broadband infrastructure of the United Kingdom. The company is installing fiber to the premises (FTTP) and connecting tens of millions of subscribers in the UK.
The company undertook network survey manually to identify build activities such as installing new towers, masts or ducts, enable traffic management, and undertake vegetation management. The manual process captured requirements on the field based on maps and shared results in paper format with internal surveyors, which failed to comply with network rules. Consequently, the network survey lacked accuracy in estimating costs, which delayed decision making.
Infosys designed an OSS solution to automate the process of undertaking network survey and cost estimation of new build activities for FTTP.
Key Challenges
- Manual network survey and cost estimation resulted in inaccuracies and errors
- Lack of digitization led to delays in new build activities and escalation in costs

OSS solution automated network survey process with accurate cost estimation of network build activities
Infosys partnered with Openreach to develop an OSS solution that automated network survey and cost estimation of activities for FTTP.
Identify accurately the activities to be undertaken
The solution captures activities to be undertaken in digital format rather than on paper. These activities are now assessed based on business rules, thereby eliminating human judgement and manual error.
Automated costing reduced dwell time
The new system automatically calculates the cost to build different parts of the FTTP network within minutes of undertaking the survey, thereby accelerating decision making.
Actionable insight
The solution offers business intelligence by breaking it down into activities to be undertaken and associated costs. So if the estimated costs cross a threshold, the system issues an alert for a specialized intervention.
Automation of network survey accelerates build activities
Process automation
- Eliminates manual network survey, paper-based findings, and physical maps
- Removes human intervention in cost estimation of network build activities
Accelerates time to market
- Actionable insights enable prompt and accurate decisions
- Reduces dwell time between network survey and build
Benefits
Enhanced accuracy and reliability of network survey, qualitatively as well as quantitatively
Process automation accelerated time to market
